1. INTRODUCTION TO THE CHOICE WEBSITE AND THE E-PROSPECTUS

The CHOICE website aims to fulfil the following key objectives:

  • To give young Londoners - their parents, carers and advisers - clear details of all the learning opportunities and progression pathways open to them.
  • To enable young people to select and plan their own learning online.
  • To encourage partners to collaborate across London to deliver and communicate the full range of curriculum choices to all young people.
  • To help planners improve and develop the London 14-19 offer, its quality, distribution and progression routes available.


Advantages of the pan London eProspectus for user groups

Young people

  • A single access point for all information on courses across London - at schools, colleges and work based learning
  • User friendly, customisable look and feel
  • Easy searching for any courses using intuitive language
  • Engaging learners in managing their own progression

Personal Advisers and careers teachers

  • Easy searching for any courses using intuitive or technical language
  • Ability to make detailed searches and view the whole range of provision
  • Users can save their search results
  • Will support tools for learners including ILPs

Course providers (schools, colleges and work based training)

  • A marketing tool designed to reach young people
  • Giving equal prominence to every provider's offer
  • Providers can review and update their own entries online

Local Authorities and Administrators

  • Customised local borough pages within the Pan London Website
  • KS4 users' searches limited to the local shared offer
  • Overview and reporting on the current 14-19 offer at both borough and Pan London levels
  • Facilitating curriculum mapping and planning for Specialised Diplomas

2. ACCESS TO THE CHOICE WEBSITE

The homepage will be displayed when this site is accessed.

The homepage allows users to:

  • Choose the course age range they wish to search (14-16 or 16-19)
  • View the other opportunities
  • Create A Profile to save favoriste courses

3. REGISTRATION AND LOGGING IN

Registering allows users to save their favorite courses.

To register successfully it is necessary to fill out all items on the form and accept the Terms and Conditions.

Upon completion of the Registration form the user will be taken to the My Choices screen (detailed later in this document).

When visiting the site in future the user can:

  • Log in with the details selected
  • View My Courses (to view courses previously found and saved)
  • Log out of the system.

4. SEARCHING

Several different types of search are available:

  • Browse Subjects
  • Keyword Search
  • View Providers

4.1 Browse Subjects

This Search focuses on the Subject you wish to study, if you know what area of study you wish to follow. The User selects a Subject area they wish to search within and which age range the search should encompass. After pressing search the User is able to filter by Level, Qualification Type, Borough, Study Mode and Timeslot, as well as searching by postcode, which will bring up results from a specified area, even returning results outside the local area.

4.2 Keyword Search

This Search focuses on searchign for a specific search term. The user enters a course Title or Subject in the blank Keyword field, or can select from suggested search terms in the box, as well as which age range the search should encompass. After pressing search the User is able to filter by Level, Qualification Type, Borough, Study Mode and Timeslot, as well as searching by postcode, which will bring up results from a specified area, even returning results outside the local area.

4.3 View Providers

This Search focuses on the specific Provider that the user wishes to search for. The user can filter by Provider Type, Borough, Keyword term, as well as searching by postcode, which will bring up results from a specified area, even returning results outside the local area.

5. COURSE SEARCH RESULTS

Once the user has entered their search terms and clicked the search button, the results will be displayed.

The results will be shown as a list. When the user clicks on an actual course more information will be displayed about it.

The following options under the search results include:

  • Add course to 'My Courses' (only displayed when logged in)
  • View more Information on this course
  • View more Information about the provider
  • View more information about where the Course takes place, as well as a link to how to get there.

The user can click the options shown above to view the details.

6. JOURNEY PLANNER

Once viewing a Course details page, pressing 'How Can I Get Here?' will open a link to the Transport for London website (in a new window) and after entering details, a suggested route for the journey between your current location and the Course venue will be displayed.

7. MY Courses

Clicking the 'My Courses' link will show all the courses the user has saved as favourites in My Choice while searching. Favourites can be removed by clicking on Remove. My Choice is only available when the user has registered and is logged in.

Clicking the 'I've forgotten my password' link prompts the user to supply their username. Once completed, a new password will be sent to the User's registerted e-mail address.

8. OTHER OPPORTUNITIES

The Other Opportunities tab can be found in the 'Further Information' tab. When users click this option they will be presented with links containing detail on a wide range of other activities and events for young people that build confidence and develop skills.

This page contains links for:

  • Volunteering - Users can follow their interests, develop skills and make a difference to their community
  • Youth Services - Users can learn about the vast range of activities available in their local area run by the Youth Services.
  • Sports Activities - Users can learn about improving their sports skills. A great way of making new friends and building confidence
  • Summer University - Users can look for things to do over the summer and the chance to have fun and sample new and exciting learning opportunities.

9. NAVIGATION LINKS

There are links on the home page of the Choice Website (on the bottom right of the homepage)

These links include:

9.1 Advice

This section explains about Connexions and the services they have to offer. The screen will have links to various connexions services plus advice on what to do if you need advice now and what you can do if you have a disability.

9.2 Options

This section presents users with information about making the right choices. It also displays suggestions for where to learn for students leaving year 11 and other useful links.

9.3 Careers

This section outlines the resources available for exploring career options. There are links to Connexions, BBC, Jobs4U and London Opportunities

9.4 Qualifications

This section provides a helpful explanation of the different qualifications available, which qualification is right for the student, differences in the academic and vocational routes and the student's current qualifications. There are links to BBC, QCA's 14-19 Learning website, Edexcel NVQ Grid, E2e website City and Guilds and Apprenticeships

9.5 Finance

This section outlines the financial support that is available. There is information on money and Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA). There are links to Connexions and BBC.
